Registration Services

The challenge: keeping informed about legal changes for fundraising in multiple states, cities and counties.

No easy task. The regulatory burden can overwhelm your in-house staff.  The solution: use outside counsel with fundraising expertise to manage state registration requirements, disclosures, and deadlines for filing contracts and financial reports. Copilevitz & Canter has that expertise: in registration services to professional fundraisers on a per-state basis or as a monthly retainer for nationwide registration.

There’s more to registration than contracts and a series of filing dates.

Because registration requirements change and vary widely, Copilevitz & Canter maintains a database of up-to-date forms, fundraising regulations and laws for all 50 states. We use proprietary software to integrate your data into electronic forms. And we track filing requirements, dates and other key information. This unique focus helps us provide thorough, cost-effective registration services to our professional fundraiser clients.

State Registration

Annual renewals are required by most states and include substantial reporting requirements. Given the extensive nature of state regulation and the consequences of non-compliance, nonprofit organizations and their fundraisers cannot afford to ignore registration and renewal requirements.

What is "Unified Registration"?

To ease the burden of registration by state, city and county, efforts are underway to develop a uniform registration form. Several states have agreed to adopt this approach. However, many jurisdictions still require state-specific addenda to complete a charitable organization's registration. It's still uncertain whether this effort will finally result in a uniform system of registration. For now, Copilevitz & Canter recommends filing the current state-specified forms when registering; this means a separate filing of specific forms in each jurisdiction as required.
